RESUMO

Cellulose-based aerogel has attracted considerable attention for its excellent adsorption capacity, biodegradability, and renewability. However, it is considered eco-unfriendly due to defibrillation of agriculture waste and requires harmful/expensive chemical agents. In this study, cornstalk rind-based aerogel was obtained via the following steps: green H2O2/HAc delignification of cornstalk rind to obtain cellulose fibers, binding with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and freeze-drying treatment, and hydrophobic modification with stearic acid. The obtained aerogel showed high compressive strength (200 KPa), which is apparently higher (about 32 kPa) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. Characterization of the obtained aerogel through SEM, water contact angle, etc., showed high porosity (95%), low density (0.0198 g/cm-3), and hydrophobicity (water contact angle, 159°), resulting in excellent n-hexane adsorption capacity (35 g/g), higher (about 29.5 g/g) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. The adsorbed oil was recovered by the extrusion method, and the aerogel showed excellent recyclability in oil adsorption.

Background and Aims: The National Standardized Training for Resident Doctors (STRD) in mainland China encounters many challenges in its implementation. To investigate whether outpatients are willing to undergo indirect ophthalmoscopy examination conducted by ophthalmology residents in the ophthalmology STRD program in China. Methods: This study conducted a cross-sectional survey at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University between September 2021 and September 2023. A cohort of 300 initial outpatients requiring indirect ophthalmoscopy examinations were enlisted from the outpatient department. Based on whether the patients are willing to undergo an indirect ophthalmoscopy examination by resident doctors, patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 (willing) and Group 2 (unwilling), and their questionnaire responses were comparatively analyzed. Results: A total of 261/300 (87%) valid questionnaires were returned in the survey, which included 149 males and 112 females. No notable gender difference (p = 0.400) or disparity in medical expense categories (p = 0.786) was observed between the two groups. However, variables such as outpatient marital status (p = 0.002), the presence of training faculty during fundus examinations with residents and outpatients (p < 0.001), the demeanor of training residents toward patients (p < 0.001), and the quality of doctor-patient communication (p < 0.001) significantly varied between the groups. Conclusion: The level of outpatients' cooperation with ophthalmology residents during fundus examinations in the Chinese ophthalmology STRD program was observed to be low. Enhancing the presence of training faculty during examinations and enhancing the communication skills of training residents could significantly improve this situation.

AIM: To determine the in vitro protective effect of recombinant prominin-1 (Prominin-1)+microRNA-29b (P1M29) on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxicity in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). METHODS: RGC-5 cells were cultured, and NMDA-induced excitotoxicity at the range of 100-800 µmol/L was assessed using the MTT assay. NMDA (800 µmol/L) was selected as the appropriate concentration for preparing the cell model. To evaluate the protective effect of P1M29 on the cell model, Prominin-1 was added at the concentration of 1-6 ng/mL for 48h, and the cell survival was investigated with/without microRNA-29b. After obtaining the appropriate concentration and time of P1M29 at 48h, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was utilized to detect the relative mRNA expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß2. Western blot detection was applied to measure the phosphorylation levels of protein kinase B (AKT) and extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) in RGC-5 cells after treatment with Prominin-1. Apoptosis study of the cell model was conducted by flow cytometry for estimating the anti-apoptotic effect of P1M29. Immunofluorescence analysis was used to analyze the expression levels of VEGF and TGF-ß2. RESULTS: MTT cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that P1M29 group had significantly higher cell survival rate than Prominin-1 group (P<0.05). Real-time PCR data indicated that the expression levels of VEGF were significantly increased in both Prominin-1 and P1M29 groups compared NMDA and microRNA-29b group (P<0.05), while TGF-ß2 were significantly decreased in both microRNA-29b and P1M29 groups compared NMDA and Prominin-1 group (P<0.05). Western blot results showed that both Prominin-1 and P1M29 groups significantly increased the phosphorylation levels of AKT and ERK compared to NMDA and microRNA-29b groups (P<0.05). Flow cytometry analysis revealed that P1M29 could prevent RGC-5 cell apoptosis in the early stage of apoptosis, while immunofluorescence results showed that P1M29 group had higher expression of VEGF and lower expression of TGF-ß2 with a stronger green fluorescence than NMDA group. CONCLUSION: Prominin-1 combined with microRNA-29b can provide a suitable therapeutic option for ameliorating NMDA-induced excitotoxicity in RGC-5 cells.

Various catalysts are developed to improve the performance of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors, but achieving high selectivity and response intensity in chemiresistive gas sensors (CGSs) remains a significant challenge. In this study, an in situ-annealing approach to synthesize Cu catalytic sites on ultrathin WO2.72 nanowires for detecting toluene at ultralow concentrations (Ra /Rg = 1.9 at 10 ppb) with high selectivity is developed. Experimental and molecular dynamic studies reveal that the Cu single atoms (SAs) act as active sites, promoting the oxidation of toluene and increasing the affinity of Cu single-atom catalysts (SACs)-containing sensing materials for toluene while weakening the association with carbon dioxide or water vapor. Density functional theory studies show that the selective binding of toluene to Cu SAs is due to the favorable binding sites provided by Cu SAs for toluene molecules over other gaseous species, which aids the adsorption of toluene on WO2.72 nanowires. This study demonstrates the successful atomic-level interface regulation engineering of WO2.72 nanowire-supported Cu SAs, providing a potential strategy for the development of highly active and durable CGSs.

The analysis of exhaled breath has opened up new exciting avenues in medical diagnostics, sleep monitoring, and drunk driving detection. Nevertheless, the detection accuracy is greatly affected due to high humidity in the exhaled breath. Here, we propose a regulation method to solve the problem of humidity adaptability in the ethanol-monitoring process by building a heterojunction and hollow-out nanostructure. Therefore, large specific surface area hollow-out Fe2O3-loaded NiO heterojunction nanorods assembled by porous ultrathin nanosheets were prepared by a well-tailored interface reaction. The excellent response (51.2 toward 10 ppm ethanol at 80% relative humidity) and selectivity to ethanol under high relative humidity with a lower operating temperature (150 °C) were obtained, and the detection limit was as low as 0.5 ppb with excellent long-term stability. The superior gas-sensing performance was attributed to the high surface activity of the heterojunction and hollow-out nanostructure. More importantly, GC-MS, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and DFT were utilized to analyze the mechanisms of heterojunction sensitization, ethanol-sensing reaction, and high-humidity adaptability. Our integrated low-power MEMS Internet of Things (IoT) system based on Fe2O3@NiO successfully demonstrates the functional verification of ethanol detection in human exhalation, and the integrated voice alarm and IoT positioning functions are expected to solve the problem of real-time monitoring and rapid initial screening of drunk driving. Overall, this novel method plays a vital role in areas such as control of material morphology and composition, breath analysis, gas-sensing mechanism research, and artificial olfaction.

Purpose: To compare the ocular surface and meibum microbial communities of humans with Demodex Blepharitis (DB) and healthy controls. Methods: Conjunctival sac and meibum samples from 25 DB patients and 11 healthy controls were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). Results: The alpha-diversity of the conjunctival sac microbiome of the DB group (observed, Chao1, ACE) was lower than that of the control group, whereas all meibum diversity indicators were similar. In conjunctival samples, the relative abundance (RA) of the phylum Proteobacteria was significantly higher (p=0.023), and the RA of both phyla Actinobacteria and Firmicutes was significantly lower (p=0.002, 0.025, respectively) in the DB group than that in the control group. In meibum samples, the RA of the phyla Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were similar, whereas that of the phylum Firmicutes was significantly lower in the DB group (p=0.019) than that in the control group. Linear discriminant analysis with effect size measurement of the conjunctival and meibum microbiomes showed that Sphingobium sp. YG1 and Acinetobacter guillouiae were enriched in the DB group. Sphingobium sp. YG1, Acinetobacter guillouiae and Pseudomonas putida in the DB group were related to more severe ocular surface clinical parameters. Discriminative genera's principal coordinate analysis separated all control and DB microbiomes into two distinct clusters. Conclusions: Proteobacteria's increased prevalence may indicate ocular microbial community instability. The species Sphingobium sp. YG1 and Acinetobacter guillouiae are potentially pathogenic bacterial biomarkers in DB. Demodex infection mainly affects the ocular surface microbiome rather than penetrating deeper into the meibomian gland.

BACKGROUND: To compare the quantitative and qualitative optical outcomes of single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TPRK) and off-flap epipolis-laser in situ keratomileusis (Epi-LASIK) in moderate to high myopia. METHODS: In this prospective self-control study, we included patients with moderate to high myopia who were randomized to undergo TPRK in one eye and Epi-LASIK in the other eye. Twelve-month follow-up results for visual acuity, refraction, ocular high-order aberrations, contrast sensitivity, postoperative pain, epithelial healing, and haze grade were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 64 eyes (32 patients) were enrolled in the study. More eyes completed re-epithelialization in the TPRK group than in the Off-flap Epi-LASIK group 3-4 days postoperatively, while all eyes completed re-epithelialization by 7 days. More eyes achieved a visual acuity (both UDVA and CDVA) of better than 20/20 in the TPRK group than in the Off-flap Epi-LASIK group. The ±0.50 D predictability for correction of the spherical equivalent (SE) was higher in the eyes of the TPRK group (91%) than in those of the off-flap Epi-LASIK group (80%) 12 months after surgery. No significant differences in ocular aberrations, including coma, spherical, and trefoil, were found between the two groups at 12 months. There were also no significant differences in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, pain, and haze grading between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both TPRK and off-flap Epi-LASIK are safe, effective, and predictable treatments for moderate to high myopia with comparable surgical outcomes. BACKGROUND: To delineate the mutations of the TGFBI gene in Eastern China by whole-exome sequencing (WES) in eight Chinese families with lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included eight families with LCD from Eastern China. Clinical features were examined using slit-lamp examination, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, and in vivo confocal microscopy. Peripheral blood samples of probands were collected for WES, and saliva samples from family members were collected for TGFBI screening using Sanger sequencing. The physicochemical effects of mutations were investigated using bioinformatics tools. RESULTS: Family 1 presented a classic LCD I with a p.R124C mutation of the TGFBI gene, while the other seven families were diagnosed with LCD IIIA. Six of the seven LCD IIIA families had heterozygous single-gene mutations (p.A546D, p.L565 H, p.T621P), and one had a compound heterozygous (cis) mutation (p.P501T and p.N622 H). The mutation of p.L565 H was the first time of integrated family report in contrast to the cases reported in 2019, and the p.T621P mutation was first reported in a Chinese population. Notably, the family with the compound mutation was associated with an obvious early-onset (in the 2nd decade of life) compared to the LCD IIIA patients with each single mutation (p.P501T or p.N622 H) showing late-onset (in the 7th decade of life). CONCLUSIONS: WES is efficient for the genomic testing of LCD and genetic relationship identification in different families with the same mutated gene. We identified a compound heterozygous mutation (p.P501T and p.N622 H) and two mutations (p.T621P and p.L565 H) uncommon in China.

PURPOSE: To investigate the changes and evaluate the diagnosis value of circumpapillary vessel density (VD) in cases of acute primary angle closure (APAC). DESIGN: Case-control study. METHODS: APAC patients with a history of unilateral acute attack were enrolled. The eyes with acute episode constituted the case group while the contralateral eyes without attack consisted of the control group. Ophthalmic examinations including slit-lamp examination, best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure and visual field were carried out. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, while VD was assessed by optical coherence tomography angiography. RESULTS: The whole en face image vessel density (wiVD), circumpapillary vessel density (cpVD) and inside disk VD for both all vessels and capillary were all significantly lower in the APAC eyes compared to the fellow eyes (P < 0.01 for all). In APAC eyes, the wiVD, inside disk VD and cpVD both for all vessels and capillary were all positively correlated with RNFL and GCC thicknesses but negatively correlated with the mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation (PSD) and the duration of acute attack (all P < 0.01). From the ROC curve, the cpVDcap, wiVDcap, cpVDall and wiVDall all showed comparable diagnostic ability with RNFL, GCC and MD to differentiate eyes with APAC from the fellow eyes (all P > 0.05). The inside disk VDcap and VDall demonstrated significant lower diagnostic ability than the cpVDcap, wiVDcap, cpVDall and wiVDall (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In APAC eyes, circumpapillary VD decreased significantly compared with the fellow unaffected eyes. They were significantly correlated with thicknesses of RNFL and GCC, and visual field MD and PSD in the APAC eyes. The patients with longer duration of acute attack were more likely to have lower cpVD. For APAC, the diagnostic ability of wiVD and cpVD was similar with RNFL, GCC and MD and was higher than inside disk VD.

Compared with the conventional building, the industrialized building (IB) promotes the sustainable development of the construction industry, which will become a growth trend in the future. Nevertheless, the progress of industrialized building is intimately affected through the scientific evaluating mechanism, which still requires more research. Thus, this study establishes a conceptual framework of industrialized building assessment (IBA), which is validated through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The impact between efficiency and the other five dimensions are studied by the structural equations model (SEM). The findings indicated that the conceptual framework is valid, and the efficiency has a positive impact on economic factors, livability, safety, environmental factors, and social benefits. Consequently, the improvement of efficiency has turned out to be the primary issue for improving the growth of the industrialized building. This research explores the basic framework of industrialized building assessment and provides a basis to establish a comprehensive and precise industrial building evaluation mechanism in the near future.
